Grand Ole Opry to Add "Opry Country Classics" on Thursday Nights

Grand Ole Opry

Nashville will have a new entertainment option on Thursday nights next year when the Grand Ole Opry adds Opry Country Classics to its current line-up of Tuesday, Friday and Saturday performances.

The all-new addition to the Opry’s schedule will shine a spotlight on the classic country songs that have defined country music for generations of fans. Opry Country Classics will share country music’s colorful story through a live performance featuring country favorites performed by legends of the genre as well as talented new artists, a rousing live band, square dancing, and more. Like current Opry broadcasts, the show will be heard on 650 WSM-AM.

“We are pleased to introduce this new show that celebrates country music’s incredible legacy by showcasing its most familiar and beloved songs performed by the legends that made them famous as well as rising stars,” said Steve Buchanan, president of the Grand Ole Opry Group. “The programming in Opry Country Classics is a perfect complement to our Grand Ole Opry performances featuring the new stars, superstars and legends of country music.”

Opry member Marty Stuart said, “I was raised in Mississippi, where we were immersed in the blues, rock n’ roll, and jazz, but it was the country music I heard that touched my heart. The sounds beaming from that 650 WSM signal seemed to beckon me to Nashville. I’m looking forward to performing some of those same great timeless songs for country fans on Thursdays next year. Let ‘er go, boys!”

Johnny Cash and Snoop Dog Together?????

Snoop and Cash

To be honest with you, I had to do a double take on this one when I read it. According to CountryHound.com, former Cash producer Rick Ruben is working on an album of old Johnny Cash tunes remixed to the sounds of rap artist Snoop Dog. And he has the blessing of the Johnny and June Cash estate and Cash's son, John Jr. The album is due out in October.

I have no idea what the Cash estate and Ruben are thinking on this one, but it should be interesting. I'll have more on this as details come in.

30th Anniversery of Willie Nelson's "Stardust" Album

In 1978, Willie Nelson approached the executives at Columbia records with an idea to record an album full of pop standards by artists such as Hoggie Carmichael, George Gershwin and Duke Ellington. At first the executives frowned upon the idea. Let's face it, Willie was just riding off the success of his previous album Red Headed Stranger, a multi-platinum success. This album would be a complete turnaround from his previous success, not to mention a huge risk for Columbia. Well, the risk paid off. Stardust went on to be one of Columbia's best selling albums of all time and put Willie at the top of the charts.
